It definitely is a lot of work, especially if you have thousands of products, but realistically you're not going to need or want to build links to every product page on your site so you'd start with the most profitable products.

The panda point is an interesting one and one which I'm not really sure of the answer on just yet. (this post was written pre-panda). Right now I haven't noticed any devaluation of links from sites like ezine etc which were themselves devalued in the panda update but it is a risk. At any rate though the concept behind this tactic is that you're getting deep links to product pages where your competitors probably have none, thats really the value in this tactic

It seems like a rather big job to build a huge number of low value links from low value pages into deep product pages of your site. Whilst I would not be surprised if it did make a small difference, I am not sure if your time was not better spent on other things. EZine and Go Articles were two of the biggest losers after the Panda update and the same will apply to probably all other article sites. The links won't be worth anything soon so I think you should look for a different source to build a large number of deep links. I also think that an equal number of links to each of your product pages will result in quite a suspicious link profile but that may not be a problem for now.. .

While it is important to include as many keywords in your page copy as possible, it is equally as important for it to read well and make sense. I’m sure we’ve all seen keyword stuffed pages written by SEO companies that honestly don’t make much sense from the reader’s point of view.

The purpose of these links isn't to pass pagerank, its to use, among other things, anchor text signals to boost your product pages above other near identical product pages on other shops. The links also help to distinguish a product as being unique, lifting it out of the supplemental index when you have lots of product pages which are very similar on your shop.

Since no one is linking to these FFA pages they will have a "low" page rank value with a small page rank voting share to distribute.
